Focusing on Staying Focused

Week 2 has gone by pretty fast. I'm still concerned with my performance in my English class. Judging from the syllabus, there is going to be a whole lot of writing going. Oh well, what do I expect? It is an English class. I have completed the first part of my Expository 2 assignment. The first one was done on the first day of class. Out of 20 points, I scored 13, so I definitely need some work. I will have to do some reading in "The World is Flat". That book is pretty interesting. It's opening my eyes to the world, whereas before, I really was not concerned. I had Math 40 today and we went over equations and word problems. Alot of the stuff I am learning is a breeze so far, so Math 40 is definitely my #1 class as far as easy goes. Not only is my English class 8 weeks long, but so is my Math class. I have a computer class, CSIS 115, which will run the entire semester, and then I will pick up Speech during the 2nd 8 weeks. 2 weeks are down almost because I have CSIS 115 on Saturday. I guess it's going fairly well. Labor Day is coming up so no English on Monday, but I will still have assignments to take care of for that week. I pray that I do well in English. God I will do my part, just meet me half way, Amen.

English 101: One Week Down, Seven To Go

I have declared English as my most challenging class this semester. It is an accelarated 8 week coursel. I'm may be pushing it, but I would love to have an A in this class. I know it's going to take some work, and I have been really focused on my first reading assignments. I'm starting to have a little confidence I will be fine.

I feel better today

I went to my math class for the first time today. Alot of the stuff that the instructor went over was stuff that I remember from high school. It's pretty easy, for now I guess. I just finished my math homework and earlier today I finished one of my reading assignments for english class. All I have left to do before my next english class is finish my second reading assignment and participate in an online group discussion about one of the reading assignments. I'm pretty content at this point.

An Essay on the First Day?!!!

I started my first class today, English 101. After taking notes on the instructors expectation of the framework of an essay -- Intro, Body, Conclusion, Thesis, 6 paragraphs, yadda yadda yadda -- she went on to discuss the class syllabus and kindly informed us there would be a pop quiz on the syllabus during our next class. At this point, I'm feeling good and amped to ace this class, when all of a sudden BAM!! She instructs us to write an essay in response to a quote in one of our text books. I was terrified! I have been out of school for 8 years for goodness sakes! From what I can remember, the quote stated a comparision of post World War II to a wealthy family's decline from hardworking to lazy by the third generation. The instructor provided the basics on composing the essay at the start of class, but here, I was with a blank mind, now knowing how to start, what to put in the middle to support my first paragrah, aw man, I just felt like a dummy. I ended up with several pages of incomplete thoughts and scribbles everywhere. I felt so bad after class I had to let a few tears drop. After picking up my kids I headed home. I guess my significant other sensed something wrong when I walked in the door, so I told him about the essay, and how it was 20 points, and how I had no idea how to compose this essay. I was so upset with myself, and so emotional, but he calmed me down. I feel a little better now. I just wish I had more time to compose this essay. Oh well, I may not know how to put together an essay, but that's why I am in this class - to learn how to. I am not giving up!!

A Scholarship Search turns into an Ancestry Search

This past weekend I was searching for scholarships online when I came across a lot of scholarships for Indians. Then I started thinking, "is Indian in my blood lineage?" Soon after I had that thought I called my mother and asked her. She had told me that my Great Great Grandmother Cora was part Indian, she wasn't sure which tribe though. That's when my ancestry search started. I have found it very interesting so far. I love a challenge, and searching for my ancestors definitely is one. On my moms side I am able to go as far back as my Great 3x's Grandmother and Grandfather. On my Father's side I am only able to go as far back as my Grandmother's parents. I am currently taking advantage of a 14 day free trial on
Ancestry.com. Going through various documents on the site, I felt amazed out how well our lifetime can be tracked. I was able to go through census records, marriage records, death records, and other resources. I have definitely discovered a new hobby.

What do you mean the world is flat?!

I went to pick up my books yesterday and boy were the lines long. I waited patiently though, along with my 2 kids. They behaved very well. When I got home I started thumbing through one of the books that I assume is for my English class. The name of the book is The World is Flat--A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century by Thomas L. Friedman. Once I started reading, I found the book quite interesting. From what I have read so far, when the author speaks of the world being flat, he is referring to the level playing field brought about by globalization. The question that arose as I was reading was "Is globalization good or bad?" I really don't have a full understanding of globalization at this point to answer that question in my own words, so I guess I will have to finish the book to get a better understanding of this whole globalization thing. I know also that I can't depend on the opinion of one man (the author of the book) to help me to define for myself what it means. I have never really ventured any further than my own back yard so to speak, so I am really not in tune with what is going on in the world around me. I mean, I listen to the world news occasionally, but I really can't relate to what's going on outside my own backyard. Should I try to, if so, would I be opening up a can of worms. I have enough issues as it is. If anyone runs across this post, please share your point of view. I am very receptive, yet discerning. Please leave a comment below.

YES YES YESS!!!

I checked the status of my financial aid on my school's website and found that I will definitely have enough money for the semester. Tuition and books are taken care of. I have to go pick up my books and supplies tomorrow then I will be all set. Now all I have to focus on is getting good grades. I plan to look into volunteer opportunities, as well as getting involved in a few clubs. I know that these things will look good on my resume when applying for scholarships. I'm glad that I am starting off at a community college because it is definitely the best thing for me financially. When I transfer to a University is when the big bucks will come into play. That's why I have to work hard and hope that the scholarships I will apply for help out.

Still waiting for my award letter

I started the financial aid process on 7/15/06 by filing a FAFSA online. It only took a couple of business days to process. I then waited around thinking the school I requested to have my student aid report sent to would call me and let me know what to do next. That didn't happen so I ended up calling the school and was told to come in to fill out more paperwork. I was not selected for verification, so that was less paperwork for me to fill out. I then had to declare my degree, which is an Associate in Arts degree to start off with before I transfer to Central Missouri State University. I completed everything I was advised to do 7/31/06, so now I'm just waiting to find out how much I will be getting back. I just want the wait to be over so that I will be able to know for sure that I will start school this fall. The suspense is killing me.
